Your Wednesday night Jazz Odyssey Moe Velez, the “UnShazamable DJ” is a music fanatic, DJ, producer and performer. Moe started with Jazz Odyssey in August of 2019 at the “old studio on Welton street in a slightly more "analog" studio with CD players and record players. 

Since then we've had to navigate a pandemic, relocating to a new studio, the transition to digital cataloging, as well as a few other bumps in the road. But there's a great reward in doing the work, and that is doing what I do best on a mass scale - showing people the music that I love. As someone who DJs in clubs, there is a lot of pressure there to have a dance floor going. But when I DJ on the air I can play anything I want without that feeling, so some nights will be floaty and contemplative, while others might be harder hitting or even more straight ahead jazz on other nights.”

We are proud to present 14 year Jazz Odyssey veteran Venus Cruz! From jazz to soul, hip hop to Afro-Latin, Denver-based vocalist Venus Cruz has opened for artists such as Gregory Porter, Hiatus Kaiyote, Black Thought of The Roots, Emily King, Meshell Ndegeocello, Saul Williams, Zap Mama, Al Green, Guru, Vieux Farka Toure, Tinariwen, Big Freedia, GoGo Penguin, Corey Henry and Mark De Clive Lowe, to name a few.

This month’s Jazz Odyssey Presents is full of Jazz Odyssey all-stars because following Venus Cruz & Super Distant Boyfriend will be a special DJ set from another Jazz Odyssey host Mark Anthony! This will be a special show not to be missed.

Comprised of Boulder’s favorite fools, Wampus Cat isn’t just a band — it’s a full-blown musical monster. High-energy, wildly talented, and just the right amount of goofy, Wampus Cat brings an eclectic mix of influences and an unstoppable groove to everything they do. Each member throws their own flavor into the pot, blending genres and vibes into something fresh, funny, and impossible to pin down. Colorado-born multi-instrumentalist and producer Sonya Walker places jazz piano at the center of her musical solar system, but she is otherwise known as a trumpet player, singer, guitarist, and bassist.

Sonya began studying classical piano when she was 5, and picked up her great uncle's cornet three years later. She taught herself to play until high school, when she was introduced to jazz in her freshman year. She started playing trumpet with local professional bands when she was 15. Since then she's shared the stage with jazz legends like Randy Brecker, Roy Hargrove, Greg Gisbert, and Art Lande, toured, and currently holds a residency at Denver’s iconic Dazzle jazz club. Her recorded and live work as a sideman spans numerous genres, from modern jazz and funk to avant-garde, EDM and Americana.

Her work can be heard live regularly around Denver with neo-soul band Tansy Wine, video game cover band Nostal-Jazz, fusion group The Cat’s Glasses, Jeremy Mohney's trad swing orchestra, Hugh Ragin's Messenger's of Peace, Electric Giz, and with folk singer John Shepherd. She has also founded a few projects of her own; her compositions and work as a leader can be heard in her electronica duo PROTOTYPE, her project Mirror Phases, her jazz quintet, trio, and solo performances, and her songwriting performances on piano, guitar, and vocals.
